Marriage Vows - Oct. 2, 1999

Marriage vows between Kevin and Rebecca - Oct. 2, 1999

I vow to protect you from all enemies of your passion.

When your eyes rush to the horizon, I vow to watch your footing.

I vow not to let our days stack up like dishes, compact and uniform, but rather like well-chewed artichoke leaves flung with gratitude in a gay heap.

I vow to know the magic of your mind, and to make mine known to you, unbidden.

I vow to be game when you are more adventuresome than I, and patient when you are less so. When you must, I will see you off to go alone. But together, I vow to forever go with you where we haven't gone before.

I vow to nurture your gentleness and protect your quirkiness and help you emerge forever as yourself.

I vow to be attentive to your knees.

I vow to swoop down on each lesser thought or feeling with the keen unflinching quick of the instinct that first brought me close to you.

I vow to endure all dangers with you, and to protect you.

I vow in my closeness to you, never to excuse, never to defend, any estrangement from life in the world around us.

With this ring I encircle you. I vow to be honest and faithful and to be naked before you, for the rest of my life.

Bah Humbunk Ay-YAH!

is, according to Hart, what the King exclaims while killing the monster to save the princess.

Hart: No. But they love themselves.

Fwd: Sevi last night

Begin forwarded message:

Subject: Re: Sevi last night

surprised there was calm enough to talk w/ hart so hysterical.  that will get easier.  unless it gets harder first.

she's so mature in some ways.  walking home she talked about how sara was not a friend "in some respects."  that was about the fact that she's decided that jolene is her friend.  but seems comfortable w/ ella's friendship.

she did a great job of getting thoughts down on paper a) describing the store in mexico for homework, and b) writing me a letter at school yesterday.  made me think writing is getting easier for her.  hm.

Sevi last night

she always wants to talk at bedtime which is great.  confided in me that she hopes she gets to the end of the school week quickly because it's been very hard lately.  I asked what was hard and she said they were writing fairy tales, which she found really hard.  we talked about how having a wild imagination could be the fun part, and she made up some outlandish things to show she could do it, but we also talked about how getting thoughts down in writing was hard.

A Field Guide to Rubber Bands

Sevi wanted to stop and pick up gritty rubber bands off the damp
sidewalk this morning, in order to give them to Frank Adams, who's
collecting them. I said identifying what kind they were (i.e. wild
vs. domesticated, exotic etc) was important, and for that we'd need
the Field Guide.

Dream for Candy

Had a dream in which Sevi was begging to buy candy at a store, two
kinds: Buzzies & Oyster Gods

Hart

was very clingy and schlumpy about being at Free Space this morning
after the Peace party at Sevi's school. I sat with him basically
burrowing his head into my lap prostrate on the floor while Aida read
the kids a story. Any attempts to get him to rally were met with a
"no!"... Finally Lourdes arrived and gathered him up in her arms and
started planting kisses all over him and, while not overtly
responsive, he adopted a neutral attitude, and so he was okay enough
for me to leave

help stop climate-wrecking in Bali

Hi,

I just signed an emergency petition trying to save the crucial climate change talks in Bali, Indonesia right now by telling the US, Canada and Japan to stop blocking an agreement. You can sign it here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/bali_emergency/98.php?cl_tf_sign=1

Almost all countries have agreed to cut rich country carbon emissions by 2020--which scientists say is crucial to stop catastrophic global warming, and will also help bring China and the developing world onboard. But with just 24 hours left in the conference, the US and its close allies Canada and Japan have rejected any mention of such cuts.

We can't let three governments hold the world hostage and block agreement on this desperate issue.

There's still 24 hours left to turn this around - click below to sign the petition - it will be delivered direct to summit delegates, through stunts and in media advertisements, so our voices will actually be heard. But we need a lot of us, fast, to join in if we're going to make a difference. Just click on the link to add your name:

Thanks!

Tweety Bird

Sevi noticed Tweety-bird on her socks this AM, so I said "I tawt i saw a putty-tat.  I DID, I DID see a putty-tat".  Both Sevi and Hart found that very funny, so I sought out link to a tweety bird cartoon on the internet before breakfast.

Sevi's independent reading

Sevi read her schoolbook for 20 or so minutes this evening on the john.  She even kept reading it while I brushed her teeth.  We said she was starting to resemble the absent-minded professor.  (She also spent 10 minutes before bedtime distractedly looking for her book baggy.  Found finally during last pee lodged in the window guard beside the toilet.

Hart wears the pants

For the first time Hart put on a pair of pants himself today, over
his diaper. It was near bedtime and he became fascinated, trying to
put another pair over that one, then heading to the chest of drawers
for more.

Hart's tantrums

Hart's got very imperious around dinnertime when things aren't going
his way. Fond of pushing things away, etc, then turning very impish
and grabbing Sevi's hair while she was finishing her homework project
(leaves and seeds glued to paper) with mama. Sally the therapist
says right at the point where you're about to go crazy they move out
of it. Rebecca said "I'm already crazy."

Sevi - All God's Critters

Took Sevi to choir today walking down the street, brisk fall day
(finally) with her sheet music in hand as she sang and read
"All God's critters got a place in the choir, some sing low and some
sing higher, some sing out loud on the telephone wire, and some just
clap their hands, or paws, or anything they got now..."

Hart says my name

After the bath tonight Hart turned to me and said "You're K***
B***". This cracked him up, so he kept repeating it..
