Voracious Reader
book after book with me. Kept crossing the room to the fireplace
where the books were, bringing one to me, saying "Up" to bring him up
on the couch. We read it, he said "Up" to get down (although he now
does say "down" when asked to), crosses the room for another. After
the fourth such trip, he just brought the whole pile over with a
smile. He seems interested in them now, through to the end. Likes,
for instance, "The Big Red Barn" etc.

Hart's new words:
Home - as of today, when we came indoors. Well, he just repeated it
- 'ome
Anna - as of a few weeks ago. Whenever the doorbell ring he says
"Anna" in anticipation of seeing her, his PT. It's the first actual
name of a person he has said.
Book - more like 'ook - but definitely denoting books, and wanting to
read them
Meow - more like "mao" whenever he sees a cat
Duck - "guck" upon seeing pictures of ducks or basically any birds

Sevi's Light
I snagged Sevi's new first grade teacher this morning because I
wanted to ask her if they were going to talk in school about the
importance of getting there on time (Sevi is like a cat in the
morning, setting out to look for her brush, but getting distracted by
a scrap of paper on the floor that requires going into the other room
for a pen, and then the next room for a ribbon, which reminds her of
a project she meant to do the day before, and along the way she
decides to change into a different pair of socks....and then five
minutes later in response to "Did you find your brush": "Oh
yeah...") And before I could say much of anything the teacher
interrupted me, since it was the first real conversation we've ever
had, to say, "Sevi's so, so full of light!"
It's true. I'm so grateful that it comes out in school, too, and
that she has a teacher who can see it. I know I'm not telling you
anything you don't know (which is why I can tell you!) - Rebecca

Hart's right leg/foot
mysteriously injured 3 days ago in the living room when he fell in
the living room (we think) seems almost back to normal. He's walking
again pretty much without complaint and without keeping it lifted
much. Doctor 2 days ago kind of benignly suggested an x-ray, but we
held off, as it didn't seem like a break. It seems even less likely
that it was now. A sprain? Maybe a little swelling the foot but
very hard to tell, and he never was sensitive to touching it.

Yellow Teeth
A few nights ago, while getting her teeth brushed, Sevi informed me
that mine were yellow. "The better to threaten you with if you don't
brush!"

Spoon Runner
Hart had a spoon-running operation going while I did dishes and mama
and Sevi read "On the Banks of Plum Creek" in her bedroom. Hart
would take a spoon from the dishwasher (after I vetoed forks and
knives) toddle down the hallway with it, offer it to Sugi and Sevi,
then bring it back and put it in the dishwasher, clap, leave the room
for a second, then come back and repeat, sometimes taking more than one.
Day in the Park
Fun time with Gia and Alexander on his 6th bday at Wagner (?) Park on
the water by West St. near the Battery. 2nd year in a row, and Tom
Chapin was there this time, as well as the Klezmatics, and then
Beausoleil.

Hart's questions
For the last month or so, Hart points ALOT and says "ISH?" "IZ?"
"IZ DAT?" a lot, as well as his old standby "DI-POO"
Hart walks for real
Hart started walking, cautiously, but definitively, while we were up
at Camp about 2 weeks ago. The rugged variety of terrains up there
were so challenging that I think they gave him a lot to work with.
Upon returning to Brooklyn he's toddling around on two feet probably
more than crawling and grabbing onto things less and less to support
himself. He's basically got it now.

[LOAM] Hart moos in no uncertain terms!
At the table on Sunday August 6, 2006 (I believe it was)--Hart made
mooing sounds when we referred to the cow on his Sigg Bottle,
repeatedly. Got a kick out of it too.

Hart walks, a little
On Saturday August 5 2006 I was playing with Hart at the Outdoors
Festival at Lincoln Center, and he walked a few baby steps toward me
by himself. Then he repeated the game over and over. Just baby
shuffling steps, then launching into my arms. Such a cutie.

Simon says
Sevi wanted to play that on the way to school. I said "Simon says
run. Simon says skip. Stop running. Ah, Simon didn't say." Then
"Simon says 'sing Pollywolly Doodle'" and she started belting out,
but then said "Simon has to sing it WITH me!"
Rock, paper, scissors
Taught that game today to Sevi at breakfast. She was excited about
it, and ran around getting two rocks, two scissors and two scraps of
construction paper so we could play it for real.

Pollywolly Doodle all the day
On the way to school this morning Sevi was belting this out, that she
just learned from Grandma in Boulder over the break. Made many
people smile along the way. I thought she might continue once at
school, but she didn't---maybe a bit shy, or maybe just awed by the
complexity of being back among all her peers.
Which reminds me, when we saw Jimmy and Heidi and Boulder and Sevi
was running around so ecstatic with Alana, their daughter, she just
got ebullient at one point and hugged her, saying "I love you! My
friends at school think hugging and kissing is disgusting, but I
don't!" That made me so happy to hear her sticking up for what she
felt in such a joyous way. I haven't seen a lot of that, and just
hope she continues to feel that confident of the way she feels.

Boohanti Bedtime
Every night, in order to get her to turn over on her back so I can
put on her diaper (yes, it's time she no longer wore one at night),
Sevi says I must recite the code. It's always boohanti three times
and another secret word. I guess words at random and then she says
"give up?" and tells me. Tonight it was boohanti boohanti boohanti
caterpillar, but then she added another, "worm" Once I'd said it all
she dutifully rolled over and I put on the diaper.
